The Mainland Gate

At the entrance to the city, on the N.W. corner of Staikopoulos park there used to be the impressive Mainland Gate, built while the east wall was being mended and extended by Francesco Morosini in 1687. Unfortunately along with the walls the fa mous Mainland Gate was also destroyed. Α. Anapliotis described it later thus :

The Castle's Mainland Gate

-Morea's precious jewel, that castle was –

­is now being shut, as it is late,

and he who has been left outside,

will have to wait till dawn.
