Kapodistria Square

Right after the Park there lies Kapodistria Square, with his statue made by the sculptor Mich. Tobros (1933). The Governor is leaning against the trunk of a blooming tree symbolizing Greece that is reviving. He gave up the coveted position of Secretary of  foreign Affairs to the Czar,

in order to come down to Greece, which had just acquired its independence, after so much bloodshed. The great stateman from Corfu lay out the plans for the re-organization and revival of the country. He did not get a single drachma from the public purse, on the contrary, he spent from his own fortune in order to have Greece rebuilt. He stayed in Nauplion for" 3 years, 8 months and 19 days until his assassination. During this period of national deliverance, besides the Administration Mansion, he created on Acronauplia large barracks for the army, used until a while ago as criminal prison and torn down in 1970 for touristic buildings. He also started a stud farm at Tiryns and an agricultural school, where potatoes were cultivated in Greece for the first time. At Argos he organized a cavalry camp, military hospitals at Psaromachalas, Akrokorinthos and Patras and a Cadet school in Nauplion. The Governor's house was infront of the new High School between the two streets (King Constantine's and Amalia's street). It was destroyed by a fire in 1929.
