The
Library
and the «ΡALAMEDES»
Society
At
the end of Amalias street, in the building of Nauplion's old primary
school there
is the Public Library, organized in 1951 by «Palamedes» the
progressive society of Nauplion. Today it contains 15.000 volumes and it
is the spiritua1 meeting place of Nauplion's young people. Besides books
of
general
interest, the Kyriakopoulos room contains a full series of books on Law,
representing the bibliography of the last 50 years. Recently the
library was enriched with rare editions of the 18th and 19th century
which were transferred there from the library of Nauplion's High Schoo1.
In this wing one can find handwritten books, old manuscripts and works
of the Nation's Teachers like Voulgaris, Theotokis, Koraes etc. In the
library building there is also the lecture room, where each year the
society «Palamedes» organizes a series of lectures. Its tribune has
been honoured by famous lecturers, who presented to the public of
Nauplion different scientific, social and literary subjects.
The
study room of the library is decorated with the busts of Kalliopi
Papalexopoulou, who took an active part in the 1862 Revolution for the
expulsion of Otho, and of Demetrius Sagias mayor of Nauplion (1846 -
1966), who reformed the city during those twenty years.
At
the entrance to the Library there is the bust of Nauplion's bard Α.
Anapliotis (Antony Lecopoulos 1866 - 1951). He worked in Athens as a
high rank official at the Ministry of Interior, but he always looked
back with homesickness to his native city, which he praised in various
poems bearing his personal artistic character : Humour, detailed
description, rich rime, vivid memory, play of the verses.
