The B avarian Lion

At Pronoia, one can see, at the northeast end, the Bavarian Lion. It has been carved into the rock, in a sleeping position, by the German sculptor Siegel, at a supernatural size, an order of the king of Bavaria Leopold, Otho's father. In that area many Bavarian soldiers, that died of typhus had been buried. The Nauplians of the time atributed their death to the many over-ripe cucumbers that they had been eating and they jeeringly called it the «cucumber Memorial» ! (1)

At the foot of the lion the following has been inscribed in German:

The officers and soldiers

of the royal Βavarian Division

to their comrades

1833 - 1834

This memorial was founded

by Ludovic Κing of Bavaria.
